EXCERPT

“How the fuck did this happen?” Matt’s angry voice echoed inside of his car. Jesus, a kid? He didn’t even know where to begin. He felt the traction control vibrate as he rounded a curve on the two-lane highway. He needed to pay attention and calm the fuck down. Crashing his car wouldn’t help matters.

He wasn’t dad material, not if his home life was anything to go by. Franklin Weiss was a true believer in the old adage, Spare the rod and spoil the child. His favorite tool was his belt but, in a pinch, anything would work, even a closed fist. His mother, Sonja was a cold woman. She’d married well and did nothing to jeopardize her position. Matt still wondered if he’d been made in a test tube, because he couldn’t imagine his mother participating in anything as messy as sex.

Growing up, his home life had been hell, especially after Claire left home. His fourteen year old sister was sent away to school when he was just eight. She’d come back only a few times after that, and she wasn’t the same. When she’d started college, she’d never returned. That had left him with Oliver, who was three years older than him. He wasn’t sure it was possible, but he knew, nearly from birth, that his brother hated him. Ollie never missed an opportunity to hit or humiliate him. When Claire had still been living at home, she would protect him. After she’d been sent away, he’d had to figure out ways to avoid his own brother. And for that matter, his mother and father.

Growing up in a household, where he’d disliked his family, had messed up his head and his heart. He’d been socially awkward, but it was still the power of his last name that had paved the way for him to be accepted. That was, until Finn Webber showed up on Alumni Day.

He’d been there to recruit for a law firm in some podunk Indiana town, but there’d been something about the guy that interested Matt. Finn had drive and the brains to achieve things. They’d hit it off, and after several phone conversations, Matt visited Whitleysburg and Finn’s firm, Benton and Lee.

He’d never really considered practicing law. He’d wanted the degree because it paved the way into political circles. However, there was something about the town he liked. The people were friendly and the attorneys at the firm did top-notch work. They had clients throughout the Midwest and more work than they could handle. After a long dinner and then a few drinks and cigars with Finn and the heir to the firm, Izzy Benton, Matt had learned of Finn’s political aspirations. He’d signed on and made plans to start right after graduation.

He liked his life here. His job had just enough challenges to keep him engaged, but he rarely took his worries home. He could drive an hour and be on a plane to any destination if he wanted to golf or ski. Plus, the women were plentiful and available for when he wanted sex. He’d always been up front about his “no relationship” rule. In fact, six weeks was his record for dating the same woman—until one afternoon when Ashley had sashayed into his office.

That fall, he’d been convinced that Finn had lost his mind. It was a local legend, the tale of how Hale Cameron had broken her engagement to Finn and left town without so much as saying goodbye. Now, she was back, and his best friend had rekindled their relationship.

About the Author:

Melanie Jayne

I live on a grain farm southeast of Indianapolis, Indiana with my very patient husband of twenty-five years and our two English Mastiffs, Buster Brown and Ginger. I graduated from Indiana University when it was the #1 party school in the country and I took great pride in helping the school achieve that ranking.

I haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up. I change careers every decade. I have worked in retail, a federal courtroom, travelled across the state closing loans, and behind the scenes in a casino.

I've always had an active imagination so when a good friend suggested that I try writing a book, I thought why not, it should be fun. It has, but I have had to work very hard to learn how to do it. I am so lucky for the outpouring of advice and education from so many in the industry, plus the hand-holding and cheerleading from My Gurls. I also have an incredible Ad-man-istrative Assistant, who tries to keep me under control. He rolls his eyes so much that I worry about a permanent condition.

When I ‘m not working or writing type stuff, I sleep, watch courtroom TV shows, and sports. I was a competitive pro-am ballroom dancer for ten years and I read as many books as I can.

I love to attend Author-Reader Conventions and look forward to meeting you.
